Minas Gerais is located in the southeast of Brazil and has one of the strongest economies in the country. The economically important state capital Belo Horizonte, is a modern and cosmopolitan city and was Brazil’s first planned town. Minas Gerais is especially famous for its various historical towns originating from the gold rush era such as Ouro Preto, Sabará, Tiradentes, Diamantina, Congonhas, Sāo Joāo del Rei and Mariana.

With approx. 2 500 000 inhabitants, state capital Belo Horizonte is one Brazil’s most economically developed cities. The town was the country’s first planned city and offers a cosmopolitan atmosphere with a vibrant artistic and cultural scene. Belo Horizonte is also sometimes referred to as the “garden city” due to its high number of green areas and squares spread around the city.

The city features many architectural landmarks of which the most famous is the Pampulha lake complex designed by the famous architect Oscar Niemeyer. Other attractions in this beautiful lake area include churches, museums, a yacht club, a dance hall and the Belo Horizonte football stadium. The best Brazilian “cachaça” spirit is said to originate from this state. Combined with the famous Minas Gerais cuisine, Belo Horizonte makes for a great place to enjoy an evening out in any of the countless bars and restaurants in the city.

With discovery of gold in Minas Gerais in the late 17th and early 18th century, the area experienced a major gold rush. The main route for shipping the gold back to Portugal was the “Estrada Real” and many gold mining towns were founded along this route. Some of the most famous historical towns in Brazil originating from this period include Ouro Preto, Diamantina, Mariana, Tiradentes, Congonhas, Sāo Joāo Del Rei and Sabará. These very beautiful historical towns offer impressive architecture and are today important cultural tourist attractions and the most famous one, Ouro Preto, is today one of Brazil’s most visited tourist destinations.
