For the ones who are sunrise lovers, there is no better place in the Americas to enjoy from this natural spectacle than Paraíba. Located at the most eastern point in the Americas, Paraíba is the place where the sun rises first on the continent. State capital João Pessoa is closer to Senegal in Africa than it is to the south of Brazil and is blessed with a tropical and stunning coastline of 138 km.

Paraíba tourism information

With approx. 725 000 inhabitants, João Pessoa is Brazil’s third oldest city and is one of the main attractions in Paraíba. Ranked as the world’s second most green city, it is a beautiful town and offers plenty of attractions. The town offers a beautiful beach promenade and the urban beaches in João Pessoa like Cabo Branco, Tambau, Manaíra, Ponta do Seixas and Cabedelo are excellent beaches to spend a day at. One of the best places to end the day is at the Jacaré beach where people gather to see the sunset.

The Areia Vermelha island north from the state capital is a great day excursion destination and is a truly beautiful place. During low tide the sand bank emerges and forms a temporary island less than two kilometers from the shore. There are many boats available that bring tourists here to enjoy from the spectacular tropical setting.

Tambaba was officially the first nudist beach in northeastern Brazil. It is a very beautiful stretch of beach where unaccompanied men and clothes are not welcomed. For the ones who prefer a different environment, there are many other beautiful beaches nearby.

During the month of June, Paraíba is celebrating and for 30 days, the city of Campina Grande (the second biggest city in the state) hosts the biggest midsummer festival in the world. Each year up to a million tourists come here to enjoy the great party including shows, music, dancing and the gastronomical delights on offer.

Located 436 km inland, Sousa is a tourist attraction due to dinosaur footprints having been found here in the year 1897. Later research has shown that the area has been a dinosaur valley some 110 million years ago. The dinosaur footprints here are considered as among the best preserved in the world.

The state’s tropical coastline is certainly not short of beautiful beaches. In addition to the ones already mentioned, there are many other great beaches in Paraíba like Jacumā, Carapibus, Tabatinga, Coqueirinhos, Lucena, Barra de Camaratuba and Mamanguape.
